| PC Requirements for the Elite System |
|
The Elite System requires;
- A spare "COM" or serial port. Important: this must be dedicated to the Elite System.
- A monitor with a screen resolution of at least 800 X 600 pixels is recommended.
- Almost any speed CPU - 166 Mhz or more. Faster PC is better for handling more data.
- A modern Windows 98 / 98 / 2000 / ME / XP NT operating system . . . or compatible.
- A CD Drive to install from the software from.
- Ram - anything from 32 megabytes upwards.
- Hard disk space is not critical by modern standards. Your computer should have at least 500 megabytes spare space. This will last the Elite System for a long time.
Basically, the better the PC, the faster the Elite System will run.
If you have a lot of wands (say 50 or more) then CPU speed and ram start to become important when you run reports because the size of the databases start to become bigger.
One of the most important things is to have a spare serial ("COM") port that you can dedicate to the Elite System. If you install a modem on the port then it is probable that the modem software will "steal" the data from the Elite System and you can't use it.
Saving Money
We have noticed that some clients purchase older and slower refurbished PCs for the Elite System. These are available quite cheaply - and can be used quite well for 'word and 'excel also.
This is in fact a good idea, so long as the hard drive is in good condition. A failed hard drive may result in total data loss. We would therefore recommend that the hard drive be replaced with a new unit (not expensive and only a small one) so as to give maximum life (remember ... the Elite System has a high performance database that uses the hard drive a lot and hence will stress an older unit).
| Backing Up the Elite System |
|
There are two areas you should backup regularly:
- Database Files
- Raw Data files
The databases are used for reporting. The raw data can be used to recreate your databases (if you have a list of serial numbers and their locations).
Databases are located by default in the "C:\ProgramFiles\Elite ID\EliteReporter\db" folder. This can be quite a lot of data.
Raw Data is located in the "C:\EliteData" and all the folders within it. We suggest you backup all the data in all the folders within it.
We strongly suggest you backup both these folders regularly. If you do that, you will be well insured against data loss.
Back Up Options
There are no facilities within Elite Reporter for backup of your data.
The two best options are;
Backup to CD is great. Just use your CD burning software to take a copy of both the "db" and the "EliteData" folders.
Backup to Another Computer is very good if you have a network. You may be able to arrange with your network administrator for the Elite System to be backed up automatically.
| Elite System Software Installation Overview |
|
The following are the main parts of the installation of the Elite System;
- Install all the programs from the CD
- Setup the Unloader Program
- Setup the basics in Elite Reporter Program
- Setup iButtons™ in Elite Reporter Program
Installation From CD
The Elite System CD should automatically start up when you insert it into your computer.
Choose the "Setup All" option to setup all the programs from the CD into your computer. As this proceeds, choose the suggested options.
If the CD does not automatically start, use "Start" then "Run" and type "D:\setup.exe" (assuming your CD is drive "D" .Change this to the correct drive letter if it is not) then "Ok".
Setting Up the Unloader Program
The first time the Unloader program is run it will ask you to connect the XL Memory Unloader to your PC and switch it on. The program will then scan the COM ports for the Unloader and select the correct COM port for it.
... more to come.
